Islam and Black Muslims in Europe
Islam is not just limited to a few African countries and Asian countries or the Middle East, there is also a significant amount of Islam and Black Muslims in Europe. Islam has been discovered in Europe as far back as the 12thcentury and it is recorded to have entered into the continent by a number of different methods which not surprisingly includes conquest, as the stories of the religious wars, popularly known as the crusades are known to many.
Black Muslims in Europe
Quite recently a Muslim community was discovered to have existed in the nation of Hungary as far back as the 12th century and historic records claim the Boszormeny Muslim community, as they were called, has commercial roots in Asia. Historic records reveal more significant Islamic communities that lived through the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and these communities have played key roles in the history of both nations.
In today’s age the German Institute Islam Archive estimates the current total population of Muslims in Europe during the year 2007 was about 53 million people and that also includes the 16 million Muslim people that are part of the European Union. The largest Muslim immigrant community being the Turks that are now living Europe constitute about 9 million to the population and these figures exclude the Turkish population of the nation of turkey.
In modern days Europe Islam and Muslims have a large cultural diversity and varied historical backgrounds. In current times the majority of the Muslims on the continent are from Albania, Kosovo some parts of Bosnia and Herzegovina and some Russian regions in the northern Caucasus.
There is no term Black Muslims in Europe
Black Muslims in Europe are an important part of the European population especially in countries like Great Britain. Some say that the term ‘Black Muslim’ is not valid in Islam for theological reasons. In theory, at least, Islam does not recognize ‘race’: consequently, people are simply Muslims or non-Muslims, and many of the ‘Black’ Muslims, especially those following Sunni Islam, express this. This diversity need not be seen as something that divides people, or grants a particular importance to one group over another. However, for a variety of reasons, we often do apply negative connotations to difference. And to ignore this reality is to ignore the truth that some face discrimination because of that difference.
Black Muslims in Europe, why they come?
It is common for most people to use the term ‘convert’ to describe someone who has either embraced a particular faith or exchanged one belief system for another. Lots of Black Muslims in Europe prefer the term ‘revert’ or ‘reversion’ to describe the process of their coming to faith. These terms suggest that they were always Muslims, but they had yet to acknowledge this truth. When they did embrace Islam it was regarded as coming back to the truth rather than finding it for the first time. Although Black Muslims in Europe are mostly located in the UK, there is still a large presence of Black Muslims in France, Netherlands (Holland), Italy, Germany and other European countries within the region. This is mainly due to a lot of Muslims leaving there native African Countries and relocating to become Black Muslims in Europe. Money is often the motivating factor in their travels.
